I love this with all my heart. My life is ALL about creating micro-adventures for myself. I love seeking out cool and quirky little things to do, then planning them and spending all week looking forward to them :) love your publication, just subscribed.

Thank you for this piece! Micro-adventuring is a new word for me and it encapsulates so much of what I need to feel fulfilled and joyful. It can take a chore and turn it in to a delight when it’s labeled an adventure. I’m a human that loves variety, requires delight and micro-adventuring is just the frame I need to breed these things. Ah! So happy!

I wonder if this is why Julia Cameron encourages us to do “Artist’s Dates” every week? To have micro-adventures and feed our souls!

Love the list ideas! Thank you xx

I've never thought of that before, but you're so right!! It's giving yourself that time away from a screen, just for you, to actually experience life!

I hope you enjoy your microadventures!

Thank you! I just love the words microadventures!! This could be really good weekly chat you could do for your subscribers! Are your subscribers all from Substack or did you carry some over from an email list?

Oh that's a brilliant idea! I'm still so new to substack so trying to work out the best way to connect and grow this community and I love this idea 🩷 I carried some subscribers through from my mailing list ☺️

The reason I ask, is because people who you carry over from an email list, sometimes aren’t used to commenting on newsletters. I’ve seen contribution threads be successful around the 250 subscriber mark, if you have people commenting consistently 😊

That’s an interesting thought. Artists dates are opportunities to find new coffee shops and hidden bookshops. ❤️

I’m so glad to have found your Substack this is right up my street! Currently reading this in a micro-adventure in a tearoom outside Coventry. I bought a book yesterday called The Extra Mile and it has alternatives to motorway service stations so I thought I’d give it a go! About a 5 min detour and I’m enjoying a cheese scone surrounded by garden centre plants!

Oh Beth, thank you so so much for this comment 🩷 I hope you’ve had a brilliant day microadventuring. And I picked this book up the other month at a charity shop!! It’s brilliant isn’t it - I really need to look at it more actually!

This was such a great read! I'm a big fan of photography walks, and like to do them with a film camera so the adventure continues into the developing and waiting and receiving of the photographs. So many great ideas you've shared with us here - thank you!

There's nothing better than a photography walk with your film camera! You're so right that it prolongs the adventure even more! Do you prefer shooting in B&W or colour?

Expand full comment

I love color 🫶🏻. I did a few B&W roles one winter with friends, we developed and scanned them ourselves which was really fun, but I just love color shots!

Love micro-adventures! I do them almost daily! Like you I'm pretty dang lucky and live in the back country in BC so every day is a bloody adventure. Hiking foraging for berries or other fun things. We home school so lots of nature lessons we also live right by 1 lake and 2 rivers we're always "beach side" we also love art shows and try to make it out to a few of them a year.

Oh that sounds absolutely magical!! I've found the older I get, the more I appreciated living in the countryside as well. City living just isn't for me (but I love an adventure to the city!)

ive heard that from a few friends recently - ready to get to something more slow and peaceful. love the city for all the big things. something about living where you see more animals than people cant beat that.

I commented on the same thing. Homeschooling and living in the mountains provides the perfect opportunity for little adventures.

I love this post Katie! I’m a big fan of everyday adventures. Picnics and hikes are high up on my list, as well as trying new things. Financially I’m not in a position to travel much these days, but as you say there’s always something fresh to discover close to home.

Thank you for these inspiring adventures that are simple and doable. I love looking for new places to visit and experience. It’s too easy to get stuck in the same patterns, habits and routines. It’s time to shake things up and see what else is out there. ❤️

I love a micro adventure! If we’re doing something even a little out of the ordinary, I always ask my dog if she wants to go on an adventure, and she always gets excited about it. I love that she knows the word ‘adventure’! It could be going somewhere different for a walk, or going to a cafe, or meeting a friend. Everything can be an adventure! :-)

I love this so much Sam!! There's no better microadventure buddy than your dog either 🩷 it makes me smile to see your pup knows the word adventure too - my Arthur was exactly the same!!

I also have a cartoon sheep who likes to go on an adventure, unfortunately for Seamus, he is very silly, and always getting into scrapes! He pops up on my Substack from time to time. :-)

It’s a fun challenge to find new adventures that are local without traveling far. It’s easy for me to get FOMO when scrolling through social media. I can go see new and amazing places right in my backyard.

I recently bought a book of long circular walks in my local area. Each walk has information about the history of the landmarks on route. That feels like a micro adventure.

That’s definitely a micro adventure right there!! What a brilliant book - I need to hunt out some of my walking books for the lakes and do the same ☺️ Enjoy your walks! Where do you think you’ll be exploring first?

Love this post! I love how accessible micro-adventures can be - they don’t have to be big thrill-seeking, adreneline-filled activities. I’m now sat here thinking about what micro-adventures we can have with our kids before the end of the school holidays 💫

Oh I love this Helen!! Luckily it looks like this weekend is meant to be a sunny one here in the UK too so I hope you get out on a microadventure ✨ (also, on my blog, www.postcardsfrom.co.uk I share lots of different microadventure ideas for summer!)

LOVE this phrase!! Thank you for sharing! I haven’t had the words to describe this but you hit the nail on the head for me! (And inspired me to find the adventure in the everyday- not just the big trips too!)

Oooh I loved this post and I LOVE the term micro-adventures! Thank you for this 🙏 I've actually slept under the stars (and woke up with dew on my face) some fifteen years ago and it is still one of my favourite memories.

I just passed a small camping spot. I need to see when they close for the season. ❤️

I love this so much. I became intentional about creating little adventures back when I was homeschooling my kids - but need to do it for myself now. By the way, I think trying a new coffee shop is a great micro adventure. 💜

Oh I love that you brought microadventures into your homeschooling! And I hope this has inspired you to have some for yourself now 🩷 enjoy your coffee shop browsing!

I’m in the same boat. I want to keep the unexpected magic that pops up with an adventure. It’s time to play without the kiddos. ❤️

I love this! I go on adventures a lot and I love that my little niece and her brothers now tell me to come on an adventure with them when they stray off the path on our dog walks and we go in between the trees and explore mossy rocks and find foxholes and build little houses for faeries. I love the unexpectedness of it all. ♥️🥰

This sounds so magical ✨ taking an unexpected route is always a favourite microadventure of mine too!

Hey Katie, your article about micro-adventures resonated with me! I appreciate your emphasis on their joy and health benefits and how adventure can be as simple as exploring a new coffee shop. Whenever I write my substack, I try to find a bench or place to write that is a little different, and your article makes me want to take it a step further. Thank you.

I'm so pleased that this has resonated with you Jon, and I love the idea of finding new places to write your Substack from. I think I might do the same - a writing microadventure!!

I like envisioning you sitting on a bench penning your Substack. 😊
