Here's everything I did to start having more microadventures...
this is almost a step-by-step plan that I took to get into that adventuring mindset
Three years ago, I decided I was bored of waiting for life to happen, and set myself the challenge to have a weekly microadventure...
In 2023 AND 2024, I had at least 1 microadventure a week, and it really did change my life for the better
So here’s everything I did to make that possible (and what I’m doing right now to get back into the microadventure habit!)
actually set time aside to do it
I would sit down every single week and work out when I could fit in a microadventure.
Whether it was a weekend microadventure, a mid-week one, an after work one
I would physically schedule the time in my diary and make it a non negotiable
remeber to embrace to micro element of a microadventure
Some weeks are busy. Some weeks you’re feeling a bit rubbish. This is where you need to remember the micro element of a microadventure.
Maybe it’s going on a 20 minute awe walk from your house, it’s sitting in the garden in the sunshine and you listen to the birds, or you head out to browse your local independent bookshop or charity shop.
Your microadventures don’t need to be big or clever (or instagrammable) - they just need to feel good to you. Being outside in the fresh air is enough to constitute a microadventure!
work out what you want to do
Sounds simple, I know, but knowing things you actually want to do makes a big difference.
Make a list of things you want to experience, places you want to see nearby, walks and view points, cafes and restaurants you want to explore. See where public transport can take you.
At this point, it doesn’t matter how far and wide they are. It’s nice to have a mix of things you can do as day trips, things you can fit in after work and things you can do easily from your house
and keep an open mind! As you start looking for microadventures, it’s amazing what you can find!
get your friends and family involved
tell people you’re on a mission to have more adventures - you’ll be amazed at how many people will a) give you some good recommendations and b) ask if they can come on an adventure with you!
at the end of the day, most of us want to live a life filled with cool experiences - who wouldn’t want to go on more microadventures eh?
so get your pals together and plan some adventures
they don’t have to cost a fortune
in fact, you can easily have microadventures that are completely free!
embrace the picnic, make a delicious coffee to have in your flask, find free car parks, see what you can do around where you live
I’d love to hear how you’re embracing microadventures this month!

I have a PhD in Microadventures! :o) Today, I went to a coffee shop I've never been to before. Thursday, I'm going to a concert (won free tickets) of a band I know nothing about (My Morning Jacket). Microadventures keep me going. Novelty is everything.
When I retired in September I made a list of trips and things to do. I sorted them into short, medium and longer and promised myself I’d do at least I each week. I didn’t quite, but the weather was wet and miserable so staying home did look very attractive. However, the next few weeks will be all about visiting bluebell woods.
